The OKI Regional Planning Conference is a bi-annual meeting conducted by the American Planning Association’s Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana chapters.  The OKI Conference provides invaluable professional development and networking opportunities for land use planners, as well as engineers, attorneys, local officials and developers.  This year’s event is scheduled for September 28, 29, and 30 and will be a hybrid conference, with in-person sessions taking place in Louisville at the Louisville Marriott Downtown, as well as online sessions available to the virtual audience.

The theme for the 2022 OKI Conference is “Explore Your Planning Superpowers.” Planners have spent the last two years reacting and responding to the challenges brought on by the ongoing pandemic, and are very much in need of a recharge. The theme is a playful reminder that planners are special - super if you will - and our Planning Superpowers must be enhanced in order to continue to make our communities great places to live, work and play during these times of continuing uncertainty.

These planning superpowers include:

PreConference Event: Day at the Downs
Churchill Downs is home to the most famous two minutes in sports, the Kentucky Derby, which has been held annually since 1875.  The Fall Meet will be in session, so planners will get to watch some of the country’s finest thoroughbreds race beneath the Twin Spires.  While there, representatives from Churchill Downs and Qk4 Engineering & Planning will provide a tour of not only the historic portions of the track, but show some of the creative planning and engineering solutions that have been implemented over the years to allow the racetrack to expand and operate within it boundaries.  More detail coming soon.
|   1:00-4:00 pm
PreConference Event: Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Workshop at the Muhammad Ali Center
Born and raised in Louisville, Muhammad Ali was more than just one of the greatest heavyweight champions of all time, he was one of the most recognized humans on Earth and a tireless proponent of equal rights.  The Muhammad Ali Center appeals to the heart, spirit, and imagination, and inspires both children and adults to form new commitments in their lives in areas of personal growth, integrity, and respect for others.  Utilizing the legacy and Core Principles of Muhammad Ali (Confidence, Conviction, Dedication, Respect, Giving, and Spirituality) as guideposts, learners will discover their capacity for creating positive social change, and how they, like Muhammad Ali, can become leaders and change agents in their communities, nations, and the world. More detail coming soon.

PreConference Event: Rabbit Hole Distillery Tour and Tasting
Rabbit Hole Distillery, located in the heart of the NuLu neighborhood in Louisville, has been described as “modern cathedral that pays homage to the art and science of distillation.” The facility is as unique and innovative as the spirits it produces, and planners will be treated to an immersive one-hour tour showing how grain transforms to whiskey and how the Rabbit Hole philosophy has changed the bourbon landscape. After the tour, enjoy a beverage in the Rabbit Hole Distillery bar while getting a rooftop tour of the NuLu neighborhood.
